The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

Sleepy Hollow Golf Club originated in 1921 post-World War I when Nitro sports enthusiasts built the Pocatalico Golf Links on land leased from a gunpowder manufacturer. By 1927, the club shifted to the old Dudding Farm and was renamed “Sleepy Hollow Golf Club”, selling its initial 200 shares of stock. Throughout the 1930s, it was a prime attraction in the valley, particularly for the Charleston residents. In 1938, they moved back to the original Pocatalico location. World War II caused a decline in play, leading to the club’s closure in 1942. It was only in 1946, thanks to Rutherford V. Hill and volunteers, that the club reopened.

The club soon needed a larger space. In 1955, a 280-acre property in Teays Valley, once owned by Samuel Handley, was acquired and developed. By 1989, expansion led to building a new clubhouse. By 1990, the club’s operations were fully moved, now catering to over 450 members. The club’s success is attributed to its members’ dedication and a shared passion for golf.
